Admissions

The Ostrava International School welcomes applications from students of all nationalities who wish to benefit from an international education in Ostrava.

OPPORTUNITY. DIVERSITY. CREATIVITY.

The school is non-discriminatory in its admissions policy and wishes to promote intercultural understanding and international-mindedness. By fostering Opportunity, Diversity, and Creativity TOIS creates an inclusive environment where every student has the chance to thrive, drawing on diverse perspectives and encouraging innovative thinking.

Grade Placement

Students at TOIS come from over 30 countries around the world. We strive to place students at their appropriate level, which may differ from a student’s previous placement in their home country or other international school systems. We begin placement by age as of September 1st of the given school year but may also take into consideration additional factors, such as the different timings of other school years, or additional learning support needed. For details, please visit OpenApply, section Age Placement Rubric.

Language

The language of instruction at The Ostrava International School is English. If a student’s level of English is lower than expected for the student’s grade level, he or she may still be admitted but will be required to take an extra course, English as an Additional Language (EAL), delivered at TOIS.

New Student Applications

Applications to TOIS and associated documentation are completed and submitted online using OpenApply on our school webpage. After lodging an enrolment form to OpenApply, the following entry requirements apply for new students (where applicable):

  • English Placement Test to determine the student’s level
  • Mathematics Placement Test
  • Second Foreign Language Placement Test
  • Czech/Korean Language & Literature Placement Test (for Czech/Korean nationals only)

Further tests in other subjects may be required by the Head of School. Based on the results of these tests and the documentation provided, the school will decide upon the applicant’s suitability for enrolment in the programme. There are no prescriptive minimum levels required by the school for entry to the IB Continuum, only certain expected levels. New students are observed during their first few weeks to determine if there are any additional learning needs or considerations for placement.

TOIS Early Years Programme for students aged 3 - 5

The TOIS Early Years Programme focuses on play-based learning and the development of social skills needed for children to work together. • recognise their name and react when hearing it
  • react to the gestures of “yes” and “no”
  • communicate in their native language
  • distinguish their belongings (clothes, shoes, slippers, pyjamas, bag, …etc.), and be able to point at them
  • hold a spoon correctly and use it independently
  • eat their snack independently
  • drink from a bottle or cup without the help of an adult
  • use the toilet independently, (no diapers)
  • wash his/her hands independently
  • brush his/her teeth independently
  • put on slippers and shoes independently
  • dress himself/herself in simple clothes

IB Primary Years Programme for students aged 5 to 10

The IB Primary Years Programme promotes the idea that students and teachers are partners in the learning process of discovery, connection and achievement. Students are led to become active agents of their own learning, and in collaboration with others.

Inquiry-based learning encourages students and teachers to grapple with conceptual understandings, to reflect on their work and develop their skills and the attributes of the IB Learner profile.

Students, aged 5 to 10, could join our school any time, even during the academic year. There are no special expectations for admission, except the vacancy in the particular class and general conditions specified in the sections above.

IB Middle Years Programme for students aged 11 to 16

The IB Middle Years Programme is a 5 years programme designed for students aged 11 to 16. It is the first stage of secondary school education after the student has completed the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) or equivalent. The MYP emphasizes intellectual challenge and encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers. The programme builds upon the knowledge, skills and attitudes developed in the PYP and prepares students to meet the academic challenges of the IB Diploma Programme (DP). The MYP also fosters the development of skills for communication, intercultural understanding and global engagement – essential qualities for young people who are becoming global leaders.

There are no special expectations for admission to the Middle Years Programme, except the vacancy in the particular class and general conditions specified in the sections above.

IB Diploma Programme

The IB Diploma Programme (DP) is the final 2-year graduation programme for students of The Ostrava International School. It is the culminating stage of secondary school education after the student has completed the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) or equivalent. The aim of the IBDP is to further develop in the student the essential skills, knowledge, and values he or she has acquired thus far in their prior education, as they prepare for success as further tertiary education candidates and as global citizens.
All MYP5 students may progress automatically into the final stage of their IB Continuum, the IB Diploma Programme (DP1), after completing all requirements of the MYP.
Because the IB Diploma Programme is a continuous two-year course, we can only accept transfer students into the second year of the programme (DP2) from another IBDP World School.
The expected CEFR level of English for enrolment in Year 1 of the IB Diploma Programme is B2.
